Walk to Houghton House and King's Wood

I have searched around and most of the published walks are for at least 2 hours, so thought I would put together this short walk, which I think should take you about an hour, and then another 20 minutes to look around if you choose. Am pthill Market market is in the main car park behind NatWest bank, and we are the nearest to the bank, come and say hello. We can hold onto your purchases until midday, so you can go and wander and not miss out on the best cakes :) Or we normally have quiche in various sizes, and small cakes - so take it with you, along with something to sit on and enjoy a picnic on the lawns of Houghton House. Willington Dovecote - National Trust

The only National Trust building in Bedfordshire is Willington Dovecote , we stopped by there recently and had the pleasure of being shown around the Dovecote, Stables, and also the church. It was well worth the visit, you can go for a walk to the river after. It is only 20 minutes or so from Ampthill. There are 1500 'nests' in each of the two dovecotes - so a lot of doves/pigeons used to be here...and you know what would accompany that many birds.... This is the stable building that also remains as part of the farm buildings. They do have some information in the Stable building, and there is speculation about its original reason for being built. The chap that showed us around was very knowledgeable and is keen to promote the site, and would love to be able to get some better info boards. Swiss Gardens

Last summer we went to the Swiss Gardens, it was a glorious day, and we took a couple of deckchairs with us and not really sure what to expect. The Swiss Gardens are part of the Shuttleworth Collection, and there are separate fees to see each of them, and from Ampthill it is less than 30 minutes to get there. It is a nice drive via the back roads, and Old Warden village itself is very attractive. The gardens have recently been refurbished, and now it is looking super smart and very neat and tidy. There are good footpaths around the majority of it, and it takes you on a nice circular walk. The garden has lots of water, quite a few 'follies', bridges and statuary, making each turn of the corner interesting. There is also an app that you can download, and you can have a walking tour of the gardens. Once we had finished in the gardens we had lunch in the restaurant, and sat outside. Then we walked back to the car and we had parked it near to the airfield, so we go...
